Herring

For hundreds of years, herring has been a key fish in the European diet and there are countless regional recipes. Look at the region and if possible choose a wine as local as possible to it.

As with other oily fish, Sauvignon Blanc is a great and safe option but Muscadet is a good alternative. Really most crisp, dry whites would work unless the herring has been pickled, then your best bet is just to avoid wine!
