Listrac-Medoc

Alone of the Left Bank appellations in Bordeaux, Listrac-Médoc has more plantings of Merlot than Cabernet Sauvignon. The reasons for this are eminently practical: a lack of gravel in the soil and no access to the warmth of the Gironde makes Merlot much the happier of the two grapes here. In the hands of quality producers, such as Château Clarke, a very fine wine is the outcome.

The wines of Listrac-Médoc, owing to the dominance of Merlot, are usually softer and fruitier than their Left Bank neighbours. In lesser Bordeaux vintages, when Cabernet Sauvignon struggles to ripen, these wines can generally still be relied on.
