Margaux

A while ago Margaux was resting on its considerable laurels, but in the last 10 years it has been reinvigorated by youth and pride and is excelling once again. Its great strength is the paucity of its soils, in which virtually nothing but the vine will thrive and of which Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly enamoured. Château Margaux is the most famous producer, one of only five Premier Crus on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, and its spectacular revival after a takeover in 1978 has been mirrored by much of the rest of this large (1,400 hectares) appellation.

The low yields brought about by the infertile soil leads to a grape that is concentrated and tannic. The resulting wines are delicate, aromatic, finely structured and capable of very great ageing. The backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon is complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Classic high quality claret that has plenty of aging potential due to its balance of delicate subtlety and sturdy structure. The palate is complex and the finish lasting but the best is still to come from this vintage.

  4. Château Kirwan, Margaux

    Château Kirwan, Margaux, 2009 75cl

Still too young to tell exactly how this wine will develop but expect blackcurrant fruit to be surrounded by strong tannin and cedar. Softening with time will bring smooth velvety palate and a long deep finish.
