Marlborough

Around forty years ago there was not a grape being grown in Marlborough, but it now has more wineries and more land under vine than any other area in New Zealand. The reputation of one Cloudy Bay did something remarkable with Sauvignon Blanc and has created a worldwide sensation.

Marlborough has since built on that remarkable reputation and admirably diversified its portfolio of small growers and boutique wineries.

Vines and Styles

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is known the world over for the intensity, clarity and range of its flavours. It fills the mouth and excites the senses; at its best, there is nothing quite like it. Oak is sometimes used but never to the detriment of the natural attributes of the grape.

Climate and Conditions

The vineyards are planted on the generally flat land of the Wairau Plains, in the rain shadow of the Southern Alps, where the alluival soils are excellent but a lack of rainfall requires irrigation to be widely employed .  Spring frosts can also be a problem, but there is plenty of gentle sun and the long ripening season allows strong fruit flavours to develop in the white wines especially.

Key Vines

Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling.
