Nelson

Hot on the heels of Marlborough over to the east, modern vineyard planting in Nelson began in 1974 (vines were first introduced in the 1860s but fell out of favour).

It has not enjoyed the incredible rise of its neighbour, but both red and white wines are well regarded and the tiny Neudorf Vineyard is an international star. Its Chardonnay is exquisite and highly sought after.

Vines and Styles

The concentrated and elegant Chardonnay has proved the greatest success, but Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon also do well.

Climate and Conditions

It is very similar to Marlborough, with summers that are sunny and dry, but tends to be warmer and more prone to devastating autumn rains. There are two main soil types: the silt of the Waimea Plains, and the heavier loam of the hillsides.
