Great Gewurztraminer from Alsace

27 Mar 2024

The renowned wine making families of Dopff and Irion can trace their viticultural heritage back as far as the 16th century and operations are now resident in the splendid Château de Riquewihr. Now under the stewardship of the pioneering Rene Dopff the estates wines are made using the 4 noble varieties of Alsace (Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Gewurtztraminer) and take pride of place on some of the most exclusive tables in France including at the Palais de l’Elysée, the French President’s residence.

Rene Dopff is a wine making trailblazer in the truest sense of the word. After acquiring control of the estate he broke away from the centuries old wine making techniques and looked to the terroir rather than grape variety

He decided to divide the vineyard at the Château de Riquewihr into four estates, which he rechristened with typically French names: Les Murailles, Les Sorcières, Les Maquisards and Les Amandiers. The Gewurztraminer grapes in this months case are grown in the Les Sorcières vineyard which is made up of marl, limestone, gypsum, clay, and sandstone, perfect for the Gewurz grape.
