Originally known as Cot, this grape has taken a multitude of names, the main one being Malbec. It produces rich, full-bodied wine with great structure and depth. Once widely planted throughout France (particularly Bordeaux), this small black grape has recently lost its popularity to Merlot.
Due to issues with susceptability to frost, downy mildew and other rots, Malbec has begun to be prominent in the New World wines of South America (especially Argentina), where the climatic conditions attenuate the likelihood of afflictions of a kind harming the variety's honour in France.

Colour and Flavours
Typical aromas of blackberry and black cherry fruit. It can produce young wines of good value, but equally well it can make elegant and soft wines when it is allowed to mature. When young, it is very potent indeed, with powerful flavours and strong tannins. The colour remains a deep red.
