Great Gigondas

03 Apr 2024

Gigondas, a picturesque village nestled in the heart of the Southern Rhône Valley in France, has long been celebrated for its exceptional wines. Revered for their depth, complexity, and robust character, Gigondas wines showcase the unique terroir of this enchanting region.

The vineyards of Gigondas benefit from a favorable Mediterranean climate, with ample sunlight and cooling breezes from the nearby Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range. This combination of factors contributes to the development of grapes with rich flavors and balanced acidity, making Gigondas wines a true reflection of the region's distinctive geography. Gigondas primarily produces red wines, with Grenache as the dominant grape variety. Syrah and Mourvèdre often complement Grenache, adding layers of complexity to the final blends. The resulting wines are renowned for their deep ruby hues, enticing aromas of ripe red fruits, and hints of spices and herbs. In the mouth, Gigondas wines reveal a harmonious interplay of flavors, showcasing the sun-drenched fruits, earthy undertones, and a subtle peppery spice.

Domaine du Gaour de Chaule was established at the begining of the last century where it was split between the production of olives and vines. As the years progressed it became more focussed on winemaking and from the 1970s onwards the estate has been bottling and selling its own wines. The 10 hectare estate is made up of 23 plots with the majority given over to the king variety of the apellation, Grenache, the average age of the vines is 55 years and the oldest plot planted by founder Eugène, is now over a hundred years old. They adhere to traditional winemaking practices, emphasizing the importance of hand-harvested grapes and careful cellar techniques.
