Nero d'Avola, Simply Superb Sicilian Red

18 Mar 2024

The Wine People was established in 2009, the brainchild of an Italian, a Frenchman, and a Dutchman. Stefano Girelli, Philippe Marx and Peter Kosten have combined their skill and experience to bring affordable good value wines from across Italy, with the help of renowned Italian winemaker Stefano Chioccioli who makes all the wines. Stefano, who we had the pleasure of meeting in 2022, concentrates on the wines from Sicily where this month’s wine hails from.

It is made from Nero d'Avola, often referred to as the "Black Grape of Avola," a red wine grape variety indigenous to Sicily. The grape takes its name from Avola, a town on the southeast coast of Sicily where it is believed to have originated.

Historical records suggest that Nero d'Avola has been cultivated in Sicily for centuries, with its origins tracing back to the Arabic influence in the region during the medieval period. Sicily's warm and sunny climate, coupled with its diverse soils, provides an ideal environment for the grape to thrive. The fruit ripens fully, resulting in wines with intense fruit flavours and a generous alcohol content. The region's vineyards, ranging from coastal plains to higher elevations, contribute to the complexity of Nero d'Avola wines, showcasing the grape's versatility and adaptability. The grapes for this wine come from a selection of vineyards on the island chosen for their unique charecteristics.
