The New Character of Chile, Roussanne and Marsanne

13 Dec 2023

Roussanne and Marsanne are two white grape varieties originating from the Rhône Valley in France, and when blended together, they create a harmonious and complex profile that has gained popularity among winemakers and enthusiasts alike. These varietals, often referred to as "Rhone white" grapes, have also found homes in other wine regions around the world like this one from Alto Los Romeros from the coastal region of Colchagua in Chile.

Roussanne contributes a lush and aromatic character to the blend. It is known for its rich texture, full body, and enticing aromas of honey, pear, and floral notes. The grape's natural acidity adds freshness to the blend, balancing the richness of Marsanne. Marsanne, on the other hand, is recognised for its structure, elegance, and ability to age gracefully. It imparts flavors of stone fruits, such as apricot and peach, as well as subtle nuttiness and hints of spice.

The coastal climate of this region is perfect for maturing these grapes as there is plenty of sunshine to ripen the grapes and a cooling sea breeze to provide relief from the heat and control the ripening process.
