Gisbourne is New Zealand's most easterly region. Vines here were planted to capture the most sun. The warm, almost tropical weather, is ideal for Chardonnay, making it soft and very round in style.
The soils along the valley floor are almost too fertile for wine-producing grapes, and in recent years there has been a move to planting vines on the hillsides. Other grapes doing well here include Semillon, Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
