Navarra is split into five sub regions: Valdizarbe, Tierra Estella, Ribera Alta, Baja Montanta & Ribera Baja.
Vines and Styles
The sytles from this region are difficult to define due to its diversity. Most plentiful white plantings include: Chardonnay, Viura and Garnacha Blanca. Red plantings include: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Mazuelo. Rose made from Garnacha is it's most well known export. Some of the best examples include oaky Tempranillo and barrel fermented Chardonnay.
Climate and Conditions
Alititudes vary from Valdizarbe at about 600m down to 350m above sea level in Ribera Baja, international varieties perform best at the higher altitudes while the lower slopes favour Garnacha and Carinena. In terms of soil, Tierra Estella hills have reasonably high limestone content, more chalk dominated in Valdizarbe and sandy soils in the Riberas.
