In 1751, an Irishman called Mark Kirwin married Sir Collingwood’s daughter and became the owner of the château. The property was renamed and a focus was placed on restoring the château and elevating the quality of the wines. Mark eventually died on the property in 1815 and the family sold the estate and the reputation of the château declined. In 1904, Kirwan was sold at auction to the Schyler family for the bargain price of 250,000 francs. Today the same family owns Kirwan and is now producing impressive wines and much of the credit goes to the talented proprietress, Sophie Schyler.
