The vineyards of Hermitage are planted on the very steep terraces of the Rhône river banks. The soils are predominantly clay and limestone. Just to the north of the ancient town of Tain, lies the village of Crozes. In the mid 1930s, this small area was given its own appellation status. Only the Syrah grape is used in the production of the red wines.
