Tuscany is probably the best known Italian region for Sangiovese production where it is the dominant variety in Chianti, Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, and the vast majority of Super Tuscans. Tuscany is also home to Brunello di Montalcino for which Sangiovese is the only permitted variety. Whilst Sangiovese is capable of making world class wines on its own (as is the case with Brunello di Montalcino) it has a real affinity for blending with other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah as is the case for this wine. The wine in this month's case shows classic flavours of sour cherry and plum which are balanced by gentle acidity, soft tannin and a medium body. There is some potential for ageing as the wine is very well balanced and the fruit expression is quite strong. Pair with classic Italian dishes with robust tomato based sauces.
