Often quoted as the standard bearer for this variety in Portugal, Luis Cerdeira is the surest pair of hands south of the Minho with Alvarinho. Fresh, aromatic and delicious.
The Soalheiro vineyards were established in 1974, not far from Megaco (in Alvaredo in fact), Portugal's most northerly town, and overlooking the Minho River. Since then, this very special terroir has allowed Soalheiro to forge its reputation as the very finest producer of this variety in Portugal. Luis Cerdeira, whose grandfather established the estate, now makes these benchmark wines. Vineyards are between 100m and 200m, planted on granite, above the Minho. Cultivation is organic, though not registered.
This is a real gem from the Dao region of Portugal. The wine itself was made to honour the comraderie between the Portugese and British in a famous victory against Napoleon's army. Hopefully that spirit of friendship and cooperation lives on and you gain as much enjoyment drinking the wine as they did making it.
The wine itself is a belnd of Alfrochiero, a Pinot Noir like grape with great concentration and a medium body, and two grapes predominantly cultivated for Port production. Then wine is aged for 6 months in oak and matches beautifully with grilled meats, pasta and cheese.
