Pomerol

Uniquely amongst the fine wine regions of Bordeaux, Pomerol has never found the need for a classification system. Devotees of this small appellation of 800 hectares, where many individual vineyards and châteaux exist, would argue that the consistently high quality makes one unnecessary and the proof, so to speak, is in the pudding. Château Pétrus and Château Lafleur are legendary names and many other producers consistently achieve the excellence their price tags demand.

Pomerol's gentle slopes of clay, sand and gravel soils are absolutely ideal for Merlot. It produces a well-structured, full-flavoured wine that can age remarkably well but will generally be approachable when fairly young. Cabernet Franc is important, Cabernet Sauvignon is used and both Malbec and Carmenère, those stalwarts of South America, are very occasionally present.
