For the December case I have selected a Cotes du Rhone wine of exceptional quality which I recently noticed was the house pour of a Sommelier friend's Michelin star restaurant. It gave me the chance to fall in love with this excellent wine all over again, an opportunity for which I am extremely grateful! La Cave Coteaux du Rhône Sérignan-du-Comtat is a co-operative based at the medieval village of Sérignan du Comtat to the north east of Orange in the southern Rhône. Founded in 1926 their 300 members have vines covering 1100 hectares in many of the villages including Massif d’Uchaux, Vacqueyras and Plan de Dieu with the main part of the production being in Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages. All the local grapes, Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier, amongst others are grown on the stony soil typical of the area. The grape varieties which make up this particular blend are Grenache, Syrah and Carignan with Grenache being the dominant variety accounting for 60%. The wine itself shows lots of ripe plum and cherry fruits with very fine tannins and would be an excellent partner to robust meat dishes such as game or stew.
